From bench to bedside, the Department of Medicine focuses on generating knowledge from research that will alleviate human suffering through the prevention and treatment of disease. Over the last decade, the Department has ranked at or near the top among all departments of medicine in research dollars granted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Including all sources, we currently hold more than 1,600 grants, fellowships and contracts totaling more than $300 million annual revenue. Our continued accomplishments in this highly competitive arena attest to the quality and significance of the research performed by our basic and clinical scientists. Important for this success is the research environment at UCSF, which, along with its collaborative culture, affords virtually unlimited opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education.
